What sits under your shingles
Architectural shingles are only the top layer. Here is the general order of a shingle roof system on a South Florida home, from the deck up.

Solid, re-nailed deck
After the tear-off, damaged sheathing is replaced and the deck is re-nailed to the rafters or trusses where needed. Every shingle nail ends up in this wood, so its condition has a lot to do with how well the roof holds in wind.
In Florida On re-roofs of site-built homes permitted before 2002, Florida's code requires ring-shank nails wherever the deck nailing falls short. In Miami-Dade and Broward, any deck must meet code nailing first.
Underlayment
Underlayment covers the whole deck, laid from the eave up with every course lapping the one below. It is a self-adhered membrane, or a nailed synthetic laid over taped deck seams or in two layers. This is the backup that helps keep water out if shingles are damaged.
In Florida Florida's code calls for one of these methods, or two layers of felt, under new shingle roofs, re-roofs included.
Drip edge
Metal drip edge goes along the eaves and rakes so water drips clear of the fascia instead of wicking back under the roof. It also protects the deck edge and gives the shingles a straight line.
In Florida Florida's code requires drip edge at the eaves and rakes of shingle roofs. Nailed underlayment goes under it, while a self-adhered one may go over it.
Starter strip
A starter strip runs along the eaves and rakes before the first course. Its adhesive strip seals down the edge of the first shingles, where wind uplift often starts.
Architectural shingles
Shingles go on in courses from the eave up, each one nailed in the manufacturer's high-wind pattern. Their sealant strips bond in the sun, locking each course to the one below.
In Florida In Miami-Dade and Broward, shingles need an approval for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone and at least six nails each, placed as that approval shows.
Ridge vent and cap
Where the attic is vented, a ridge vent lets hot air out along the peak, and hip and ridge cap shingles cover it. Good airflow, with matching intake at the soffits, helps the attic run cooler and the shingles last.
Inspect and close out
The building department inspects at set stages, such as once the underlayment is on, during installation and at the end, and we close out the permit. You get the warranty paperwork for your roof.
General sequence only. Your written proposal and permit list the exact products, product approvals and nailing pattern for your roof.

Shingle roofing questions
in South Florida
What does GAF Master Elite mean for me?
Only a small share of roofing contractors earn it. It lets us offer GAF's enhanced system warranties, which can cover both materials and workmanship.
Can you install over my old shingles?
In South Florida we tear off to the deck. That lets us inspect and replace damaged wood, re-nail the deck to code and install new underlayment.
How long will the installation take?
Most single-family homes take one to three days once materials are delivered, weather permitting.

What homeowners say
“I expected workers everywhere for a week, but the entire roof replacement moved along efficiently. The crew stayed organized and made sure the driveway and yard were cleaned before leaving each day.”
“I really appreciated how respectful the crew was around our garden. Roofing can get messy, but they took extra care and everything was left in great shape.”
“Every interaction felt straightforward. No pressure, no scare tactics, just honest answers about what our roof actually needed. That's becoming rare these days.”
